Place the ribs on a cutting board and pat dry with a paper towel. On the back side of the ribs, use a small knife to carefully loosen the membrane layer. Gently pull it off and discard it.

Cut the ribs into two chunks and place them into the bottom of a slow cooker.

Add the onion, garlic, Dr Pepper, and liquid smoke (if using).

Cook the ribs on high for 3-4 hours or on low for 7-8 hours. Ensure they are fork-tender as cooking times may vary between slow cookers.

Set the broiler to high and allow it to preheat.

Transfer the ribs to a foil-lined baking sheet. Brush a layer of BBQ sauce on top of the ribs. Place them under the broiler and broil for 3-5 minutes, or until you achieve your desired level of char.

Remove the ribs from the oven and serve hot with the remaining BBQ sauce.
