Ham and Beef Rolls in Creamy Tomato Sauce (Print Version)

# Ingredients:

→ For the meat rolls

01 - 1 pound (500g) mixed ground meat (beef and pork)
02 - 8 slices cooked ham
03 - 1½ cups (150g) shredded cheese (like mozzarella or gouda)
04 - 1 large egg
05 - Breadcrumbs as needed (about 1/4 cup)
06 - Freshly grated Parmesan cheese for serving
07 - Salt and freshly ground black pepper

→ For the tomato cream sauce

08 - 1 large onion (or 2 small ones), finely diced
09 - 2 garlic cloves, minced
10 - 3 tablespoons tomato paste
11 - 1¼ cups (300ml) vegetable broth
12 - 3/4 cup plus 1 tablespoon (200ml) heavy cream
13 - 1/4 cup (half a small container) crème fraîche
14 - 1 teaspoon Italian herb blend
15 - 1 teaspoon salt
16 - 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

# Instructions:

01 - Heat a tablespoon of olive oil in a large pot over medium heat. Add the diced onions and sauté until translucent, about 3-4 minutes. Add the minced garlic and cook for another minute. Stir in the tomato paste and cook for 1-2 minutes until it darkens slightly. Pour in the vegetable broth, stirring to dissolve the tomato paste. Add the heavy cream and crème fraîche, then season with Italian herbs, salt, and pepper. Let the sauce simmer gently for about 5 minutes to blend the flavors.
02 - In a large bowl, combine the ground meat, egg, salt, pepper, and just enough breadcrumbs to hold the mixture together (about 3-4 tablespoons). Mix thoroughly but gently - overmixing can make the meat tough. Divide the mixture into 8 equal portions and shape each into an oblong roll about the length of a ham slice.
03 - Lay out the ham slices on a clean work surface. Place one meat roll at the edge of each ham slice and roll it up, completely enclosing the meat. Place the rolls seam-side down in a baking dish large enough to hold them in a single layer with a little space between each.
04 - Preheat your oven to 390°F (200°C). Pour the prepared tomato cream sauce over the ham-wrapped meat rolls. Sprinkle the shredded cheese evenly over the top. Bake for 25-30 minutes until the cheese is melted and golden, and the meat is cooked through. Before serving, garnish with freshly grated Parmesan cheese.

# Notes:

01 - These savory rolls pair perfectly with pasta or crusty bread to soak up the delicious sauce.
02 - You can adjust the amount of crème fraîche to make the sauce more or less creamy according to your preference.
